Students learn the necessary steps to transform a preliminary idea into an architectural project, bringing into harmony the compositional principles taken as a reference case study with the environmental, functional, typological, distributional, structural, technological, plant-engineering requirements and more, so as to develop an design process both for distinct parts building typology, distribution characters, architectural elements, and more and integrated urban morphology, relations of the new building with the naturalistic and anthropized environment, and more.

During the lessons the attention focuses on highlighting those aspects of the building organism in which the relationships between typological and linguistic issues are clearly visible. The examples on which to linger longer are selected mainly from those functionally similar to the chosen theme, but also among those architectural works of unquestionable value that constitute an exemplary synthesis between the needs of form, insertion in the context, technological aspects and materials used.

In fact, architecture deals with giving shape to a condition of correspondences between questions of "content" and "expression", trying to make this link inseparable. Therefore, following a didactic approach that conceives the architectural idea as a synthesis process between theoretical-linguistic choices and those dictated by a sedimented constructive knowledge, the Course provides the students with multiple opportunities to widen their knowledge of the system of rules, methodologies and standards that govern the design process.

The students are asked to elaborate a project both in a deductive sense, that is in the relationships that the new organisms establish with the context, and in an inductive sense, that is in the choices of modular optimization, in the distribution of paths and functions, in the preliminary analysis of the relations between planimetric shape, volume and structure. This method leads to avoiding, on the one hand, pushing the design of the masterplan too far forward, that is to say, proposing shapes and volumes that have not yet been investigated internally, therefore filled with functions afterwards, and on the other to produce a masterplan as a mere result of aggregation of building types in which there is no an idea of path, urban fabric, centrality.

In order to increase the learners architectural cultural base, as well as to allow the Course to carry out the appropriate methodological checks on the progress of the design process, the on-going architectural designs are accompanied by a selection of relevant references to built housing interventions, or still in the design phase, selected by each student following an exhaustive bibliographic research.

The lesson on Tuesday is aimed at the theme of housing architecture, its construction and what is directly inherent in the laboratory and project development activities, including moments of collective discussion between students and teachers. Thursday's lesson is aimed at developing the knowledge of the theories and languages of contemporary architecture, not only linked to the housing theme, but also through works that have left an indelible and exemplary mark in history.
